CCSD hiring report details employment trends, points to future needs

The Cherry Creek School District hired 526 new teachers for the 2014-15 school year, qualified instructors who were among more than 4,100 who applied for positions.

NTO book.jpgThose numbers were among many statistics detailed during the 2014-15 Hiring Report presented to the Cherry Creek Board of Education during its regular meeting held Oct. 13 at Coyote Hills Elementary School. Helmed by Brooke Gregory, the district's Assistant Superintendent for Human Resources, the report detailed the total number of new hires in several categories, including licensed employees, classified employees and administrators.

The district hired 2,335 classified employees out of a total number of 4,149 applicants and 36 administrators out of a total number of 308 applicants.

The 526 new teachers hired for the new school year represents a decrease from 2013-14, Gregory explained, when the district brought on 570 out of a total of 4,330 applicants. In 2012-13, however, the district hired only 436 out of a total of 4,663 applicants.

More than 50 percent of the 2014-15 hires came to CCSD from other Colorado school districts, while 21 percent came to Cherry Creek from out of state. Twelve percent of the new teachers came to teaching posts from within the district.

"With a high volume of experienced teachers, it was pretty competitive for new folks to get in to the system," Gregory said, adding, "We're still one of the lower turnover rates in the state."

Gregory and her colleagues spoke of the district's recruiting efforts to find the best candidates from across the country. For example, the new crop of CCSD teachers included several new hires from Illinois, Minnesota, Arizona and other states. Human resources staff spoke to the importance of keeping up recruiting efforts, as well as starting to foster home-grown teachers from district schools. That push is all the more critical, they explained, considering growing trends in the teaching profession. Fewer college students are training to become teachers, a tendency that makes finding qualified and effective instructors even more challenging.

"We've got to start talking about how we grow teachers," said Todd Fukai, Executive Director of Human Resources.
