Cherry Creek Schools Superintendent Dr. Harry Bull has announced that he will step down at the end of the 2017-18 school year, after more than three decades of service to the district. He communicated his intent to retire at the meeting of the CCSD Board of Education.
Dr. Bull was appointed superintendent in July 2013 after serving across the district in roles as teacher, dean, principal and administrator. He was named the 2017 Superintendent of the Year by the Colorado Association of School Executives.
The board will move quickly to decide on a process and finalizing next steps for selecting the next superintendent of Cherry Creek Schools.
The following is Dr. Bull's message to the community about his decision to retire:
Over the past five years, I've approached the job of superintendent the only way I know how – with dedication, perseverance and investment. Our work as a community to ensure excellence for our students has been very personal for me. District growth, a bond and budget election, innovation, career and technical education, teacher collaboration, start times – these aren't abstract issues for any of us. In Cherry Creek Schools, these questions are matters of weight, importance and immediacy.
It's hard to find an "off" button when you're doing that kind of work, and that's part of the reasoning behind a very difficult decision. I will retire from the role of Cherry Creek School District superintendent at the close of the 2017-18 academic year. I will make this move to spend more time with my wife and kids; I will leave my post to pay proper attention to health concerns.
This isn't an easy choice. I've been blessed to serve as the superintendent of the Cherry Creek School District, an organization that's taught me the true meaning of excellence. To say my departure will be bittersweet is a vast understatement. Our community is my home; after more than three decades in the district, I still find inspiration and direction in the example of teachers, administrators and professionals at every building in CCSD. I find guidance and hope for the future in the example of students, parents and community members. It's been an honor to learn from all of you, and I look forward to watching our progress from a different vantage.
Thank you for giving me the chance to lead. Thank you for teaching me the definition of excellence.
