At its regular meeting held on December 10, 2018, the Cherry Creek School District Board of Education adopted a revision to its Policy JK that incorporates new language emphasizing the district's commitment to achieving equity in student discipline policies and practices.
This policy adoption is one small part of the district's larger efforts to eliminate disparities in student discipline on the basis of race. The Office of Inclusive Excellence and the district's Executive Director of Middle Schools are leading focused work in CCSD middle schools to ensure that the use of proportionate disciplinary interventions and consequences to keep students engaged in learning.
In addition to the reviews and revisions of the district's policies, the focus on equity also includes the use of uniform behavior referral forms and guidance documents at all middle schools. The forms and documents are used to refer, assign and record student behavior and discipline. Middle school deans meet monthly and review student discipline data. What's more, the district's Office of Information Systems and Technology has developed new system capability to display and work with current school and student behavioral data to support the district's work in this area.
