CCSD Board of Education celebrated as dedicated volunteers

CCSD Board of EducationJanice McDonald has a long history with the Cherry Creek School District.

A longtime parent, volunteer and employee of the district, McDonald is one of those rare community members who can talk about what Cherry Creek looked like more than 30 years ago. That close connection to the schools, the students and the entire community is part of what drove McDonald to run for the District B director position on the Cherry Creek School District School Board in 2015. It's also what inspired her to announce that she will run again when her first term is up in the fall.

"The district has been very good to me and to my family. I've always enjoyed working in Cherry Creek, and I just thought that this was a way to pay it forward," McDonald said. "I have all of this experience, and now I can use it again in a different way."

McDonald's commitment to the district typifies the selfless attitude of every board member, who work countless hours in a volunteer position to ensure the best future for thousands of students.

The Cherry Creek School District Board of Education comprises five dedicated public servants who work tirelessly for the sake of more than 55,000 students. January is School Board Recognition Month, and the district is proud to acknowledge the work of board members Kelly Bates, Karen Fisher, Janice McDonald, Eric Parish and David Willman.

These unpaid volunteers work hundreds of hours a week for a simple goal: to ensure that every student in the Cherry Creek School District receives the best education possible. That means that every student in every building has access to an education that properly prepares them for success in college, the military, the workplace and the larger realm of society as a whole.

"Our district is privileged to claim one of the most committed and invested boards in the state and, I would also say, the country," said CCSD Superintendent Scott Siegfried. "We are lucky to have such dedicated public servants on our board, and working hard every day for the sake of our community. Thank you all for everything that you do for the Cherry Creek School District."

That effort involves a high level of expertise. All of their work serving more than 55,000 students and more than 9,000 staff comes on top of the countless hours spent interacting firsthand with students, teachers, district administrators, parents and other community members. That direct communication comes during the countless school visits, special events and sporting events that take place throughout the year.

All of that work and commitment didn't dissuade the latest pair of new board members, who see the work as a privilege and an honor.

"I appreciate the relationships that I've built since joining," said Kelly Bates, who spoke after her first year of service on the board. "This has definitely been a year of personal growth. I'm not a politician; I am simply a mom who wants what is best for all of our students."

Each board member represents one of the district's five director districts, but they are elected 'at-large' to four-year terms by registered voters via a non-partisan ballot.

Board of Education meetings are generally held at 7 p.m. on the second Monday of the month at one of the Cherry Creek schools.  Contact information for the Board of Education is 720-554-4300 or
