Trails West Elementary students thank police officers and firefighters

The colorful crayon drawings and heartfelt words written in childish handwriting were delivered with hugs and handshakes. Students from Trails West Elementary, along with their teachers and parent volunteers, visited local police and fire stations on Sept. 11 to say thank you.

It was part of the school’s celebration of the Sept. 11th National Day of Service and Remembrance and Patriot Day, nationwide efforts to encourage Americans to engage in service and remembrance activities that meet vital community needs. The day is also designed to honor the sacrifice of those who lost their lives on Sept. 11, 2001 and recognize those who rose in service as a result of that tragedy.

Most Trails West students were born between four and nine years after 9/11 and Principal Aisha Johnson said this is a positive way to teach students about that tragic event and the important work of those who serve, including police officer and firefighters.

“Celebrating National Day of Service and Patriot Day gave our students the opportunity to remember and acknowledge the work of the service men and women who support all of us,” Johnson said. “The students were able to say thank you and let our police and firefighters know that they are appreciated.”
