The Cherry Creek School District named a District of Distinction for STEM education

logo for districts of distinction The Cherry Creek School District has been recognized for "Innovative STEM Teaching and Learning" by District Administration Magazine. Here's what the magazine had to say:

"Cuts in state education funding inspired Cherry Creek Schools
in suburban Denver to develop a partnership with NASA, Colorado
State University and other colleges to bring STEM instruction
to all of the district’s buildings and students.

The district believes “every student is a STEM student and
every school is a STEM school.” Cherry Creek’s initiative,
launched in 2014, includes elementary, middle and high school
STEM task forces to develop curriculum. Higher education partnerships
provide ongoing professional development and coaching
for teachers.

The district has also introduced wide-scale, project-based
learning and a set of high school STEM career pathways, such as
aviation and aerospace engineering. Students have even designed
experiments for astronauts on the International Space Station.

At the elementary level, students working with the FAA have
launched balloons into near space to collect weather data and
take photos. Seven balloons were launched during the first year
and 16 in the second. The district hopes to put 25 into near space.

The number of teachers in the district’s STEM training
cohorts has risen to more than 200 this school year, up from 20
at the beginning of the initiative."
