Summit Elementary celebrates three decades of dedication

Summit 30th anniversary cake serversA sunlit school yard on a late summer evening was the perfect setting for a community celebration. Children laughed and climbed on the playground, families enjoyed dinner and conversation and generations of Summit Elementary students and staff members looked through old yearbooks and shared fond memories of the school they know and love. It was all part of Summit’s 30th anniversary celebration. (See more celebration photos on the Cherry Creek Schools Facebook page.)

Summit 30th anniversary current staff.jpgThe school was built in 1988 on a hill along Quincy Avenue to serve a growing population in south Aurora. The playground and grassy area on the west and north sides of the school provide a beautiful vista of the community that has grown up around it and that came together on Aug. 23 to reminisce and remember.

Summit principals.jpg“The Summit Elementary community had a wonderful time celebrating 30 years of educational excellence,” said Rachel Rubio, current Summit principal. She was joined by four past principals: Nancy O’Brien, George Mansfield, Mimi DeRose and Mary Lams. “We had such a fun time visiting with past and present Summit family members,” Rubio added.

While the school mascot, Echo the Eagle, mingled with the crowd, current students served cake to the guests.  It was a relaxed, enjoyable evening, as the Summit Elementary community celebrated 30 years of “soaring to success” and looked forward to future generations of Summit students having the opportunity to “wonder, discover, grow.”
