Fox Ridge student wins RTD art contest

Most middle school students hang their artwork on the wall or the fridge. Sydney Cole, a seventh-grader at Fox Ridge Middle School, has hers on the side of an RTD bus.

“It’s really crazy,” Cole said of having her drawing on a 40-foot bus. “I was pretty excited.”

Cole is one of two first-place winners in the first-ever “I   My RTD” Student Art Contest, sponsored by the Regional Transportation District. Nearly 2,400 middle school students from Cherry Creek Schools and Aurora Public Schools participated in the contest and first-, second- and third-place winners were selected from each district. Skylar Elenbaas, an eighth-grader at Fox Ridge Middle School, is Cherry Creek’s second-place winter and Ethan Torres, a sixth-grader at Sky Vista Middle School is the third-place winner.

The contest was designed to encourage young people in the community to be aware of and engage with their public transit system through art.

“My parents are kind of artistic so I’ve always loved art,” said Cole. “I did a rough draft and decided to add a lot of details. I drew the environment in my picture.”

Her drawing has a message – “Clean environment with clean air” – which she hopes will encourage people to drive their cars less and take the bus more often.

As one of the first place winners, Cole received a $250 gift card and had the opportunity to go behind the scenes to learn how RTD operates. She also got to work with an RTD graphic designer to turn their artwork into a printable design to wrap a 40-foot bus.

Congratulations to these talented student artists!
