Celebrating student athletes on National Signing Day

They are one step closer to their dream of playing collegiate sports while they earn a college degree. On National Signing Day, Feb. 4, more than 80 student athletes in the Cherry Creek School District signed letters of intent to play their sport at Division I, II and III schools across the country.

“We are so proud of these student athletes,” said Larry Bull, director of activities and athletics for Cherry Creek Schools. “They have spent years on the field, on the court, in the gym or in the pool developing their athletic talents. But more importantly, they have been equally dedicated to their academics and they have earned admission to colleges and universities across the country.”

Many of the student athletes have earned academic or athletic scholarships, or both, as well as other financial support that will make it possible for them to attend college.

Every high school in the district held a special event to mark the occasion. There were cheers and even a few tears as family and friends, teachers and teammates watched the signing ceremonies.

At Cherokee Trail High School, the pride and depth of emotion was evident as Principal Kim Rauh congratulated 14 students who will be playing baseball, softball, volleyball, football, soccer tennis or running Track and Field at schools in Colorado, Louisiana, Nebraska, New Mexico, South Dakota and Wyoming.

The student athletes had the opportunity to thank those who have helped them along the way; parents and other family members, coaches and teammates.

CTHS senior Ryan Grasser, who will play baseball at Western Nebraska Community College, thanked Tammy Johnson, his English teacher freshman year.

“She got on me a lot and made me realize that in high school, I had to buckle down. Without her, I wouldn’t be the student, player or person I am today,” Grasser said.

Johnson, who was in the audience, beamed as she said “I am so proud of him. He has matured and grown and I know he will do well. I love him to death.”

Congratulations to these college-bound student athletes!
