More than 80 percent of third-graders proficient and above in reading

Cherry Creek School District schools continue to score well above the state average on the TCAP third-grade reading test, according to the preliminary results released by the Colorado Department of Education.

Districtwide, 81% of students scored proficient or advanced compared to 74% statewide.

“We continue to see steady gains over time,” said Superintendent Mary Chesley. “Five years ago in 2007, 78% of our third-graders scored proficient and above. But we won’t be satisfied until every child reaches his or her highest potential.”

Twelve schools topped 90% proficient and advanced. They are: Challenge School, 100%; Willow Creek 98%; Cherry Creek Academy 97%; Homestead, 94%;  Cherry Hills Village, Cottonwood Creek, and Dry Creek, 93%; and Rolling Hills, Coyote Hills and Walnut Hills 92%; High Plains 91%;  and Aspen Crossing 90%.

The district overall score represents a one-percentage point increase from the 2011 TCAP third-grade reading scores, which was the same increase for the statewide average.

The preliminary snapshot of third-grade reading scores measures two different groups of students – this year’s third-graders compared to last year’s third-graders. Once the final third-grade reading scores are released in August, along with the results of the remaining tests given this year, the district will able to compare the scores of the last year’s third-graders to their scores as fourth-graders this year.

“That’s the information we find is most valuable in tracking each student’s growth from year-to-year,” Chesley said.  

Students who have attended school in the district for 12 months or longer continue to score slightly higher with 82% scoring proficient or advanced.
