Grandview High School World Language department honored
Grandview High School’s World Languages department has received the Colorado Language Excellence and Achievement Recognition (CLEAR) 3 Star Award. It is the highest distinction awarded by the Colorado Congress of Foreign Language Teachers.

Schools that receive the CLEAR Award have met or exceeded requirements in eleven different indicators of exemplary language programs. These schools represent the very highest in world language expertise and achievement, and serve as benchmark for all language programs across the state of Colorado.

“This award is a high honor for Grandview’s World Language department and we are very proud to receive this distinction as an exemplary language program,” said Robyn Wisler, World Languages teacher and department coordinator. “We believe that all students are academically and personally enriched through the study of world languages and cultures. Our goal is to help students to develop the global proficiency that is an essential skill in today’s multicultural country and international economy.”

2015 is the inaugural year for the CLEAR Awards, which identify and recognize exemplary Colorado high school world language programs and encourage Colorado school officials, board members and parents to use CLEAR programs as examples of programs that enable students to demonstrate proficiency of world language standards.

There are four levels of awards a school can receive, depending on how highly they score. Schools will be evaluated on the following 11 indicators:
1.    Maintain high percentage of total world language enrollment.
2.    Offer an extended sequence of instruction in at least one commonly taught language.
3.    Retention of students in higher level courses.
4.    Provide choice of languages in a four-year high school sequence.
5.    Have Advance Placement, International Baccalaureate, level 5 classes and/or College in the High School programs.
6.    Schedule classes that are one level per period.
7.    Implement key instructional practices—teachers:
o    use the target language 90% of most class periods (or more) in a way that is comprehensible to students
o    engage students in pair and small group communicative activities in the target language daily
o    encourage/require students to express their own meanings in the target language each day
o    integrate culture into daily language instruction
8.    Administer a school-wide, standards-based, performance assessment that cuts across languages
9.    Engage in yearly staff development on world language topics
10.    Maintain membership in professional organizations
11.    Provide special program features beyond the classroom environment

Congratulations to the Grandview World Languages department!
