CCSD student athletes sign to play collegiate sports

EHS signees

With the stroke of a pen, 79 student athletes from across the Cherry Creek School District started writing the next chapter of their academic and athletic stories. On Feb. 1, National Letter of Intent Day, they signed commitments to play collegiate sports at institutions in Colorado and across the country.

Halvorson family.jpgCherry Creek High School senior Meg Halvorson is looking forward to studying elementary education and playing soccer at the University of Denver.

“It’ll be a lot different because the intensity will be greater and it’s a higher level of soccer,” said Halvorson, who plays center mid or outside mid. “It’ll be exciting and a new experience.”

Halvorson and her fellow student athletes sported jerseys and T-shirts from their soon-to-be schools. They were surrounded by balloons in collegiate colors and proud parents, coaches, teammates and friends.

“We’re very proud of Meg and everything she’s accomplished with her dedication and commitment through the years,” said Joel Halvorson, Meg’s father. “It’s great to see her achieve this goal and go on to the next level.”

Going on to play collegiate sports is relatively rare. Out of the nearly eight million student athletes who play sports in high school, only about six percent go on to play in college.  Congratulations to these soon-to-be collegiate student athletes!
