New name unifies school, programs
On only a few occasions in the 61-year history of the Cherry Creek School District, has the Board of Education has approved changing the name of an existing school.  In June, the Board unanimously approved “Endeavor Academy” as the new name of the Special Programs Center, located at 14076 E. Briarwood Avenue in Centennial.  That building is home to the district’s alternative middle school program, formerly known as CARE, and its alternative high school program, formerly known as PREP.
“It was very confusing to people,” said Endeavor Academy Principal Debra Lewis, of having different names for the building and the programs in it.  “I think Endeavor Academy is a great name and will help us unify our programs and build an identity as a single school that students feel proud to attend.”
Endeavor Academy is a school for students in seventh through twelfth grades seeking an alternative to the traditional middle or high school environment.  Endeavor offers smaller class sizes and additional support for students who may be dealing with significant challenges in and out of school.
“We build relationships and trust,” said Lewis.
Over the past two years, Endeavor Academy has shown strong results in helping students who are behind academically catch up to their peers and graduate on time.  “The sooner we receive a high school student, the easier it is to recover lost academic credit,” said Lewis.
The name change was an 18-month process, involving students, parents and staff members.  Like other middle and high schools, Endeavor Academy has a school mascot – the panther – and school colors – black, silver and purple.  Last year the school fielded its first basketball team, which played teams from charter and independent schools.  For more information about Endeavor Academy, visit
