CCSD Director of Safety and Security named Volunteer of the Year

The Arapahoe County Sheriff’s Department recently honored Randy Councell, Director of Safety and Security for Cherry Creek Schools, as its Volunteer of the Year for his work with the Arapahoe County Amateur Radio Emergency Service (ACARES).

Councell graciously accepted the award on behalf of ACARES. He serves as the Emergency Coordinator for the group, which consists of 60 licensed amateurs who have voluntarily registered their qualifications and equipment for communications duty when disaster strikes. They provide valuable support to law enforcement and emergency response agencies, the National Weather Service and other organizations, during emergencies ranging from fires and floods to tornadoes and hail storms.

Interestingly, the youngest member of ACARES is only five years old, but is a fully licensed ham radio operator. The oldest member is 85. Councell says everyone in the group is dedicated to public service.

“These people like to volunteer their time to help their community,” Councell said.

Councell also pointed out that since it was founded in the early 1900s, the HAM radio network has never failed. That is increasingly important during emergencies when other communications networks are damaged or overloaded.
