What better way to “kiss the year goodbye” than with a bag of Hershey’s chocolate kisses? How about 400-plus bags of the sweet treats? That’s what fifth-graders at Cottonwood Creek Elementary sold, made and delivered as part of a community service project. First they took orders for “kiss the year goodbye” bags. Then they divvied up 30 pounds of kisses, filled more than 400 bags with ten kisses each, and tied them up with ribbons and special messages. The goodbye bags were delivered to students and staff on May 19.The project raised more than $700 which will be donated to Project Night Night, an organization that provides children staying in homeless shelters across the country with a bag, a blanket, a stuffed animal and an age-appropriate book, so they have something that is their own. That was just one of the projects Cottonwood Creek’s fifth-grade class completed this year as part of a grade-wide commitment to helping others. The fifth grade also donated a tree to Cottonwood Creek to replace one lost in a snowstorm last year.
