Cherry Creek Schools music education program receives national recognition

Best Communities for Music Education logo.jpgThe Cherry Creek School District has been honored with the Best Communities for Music Education designation for its outstanding commitment to music education.
Presented by the National Association of Music Merchants (NAMM) Foundation, the Best Communities for Music Education designation is awarded to districts that demonstrate outstanding achievement in Middle School Choir Festivalefforts to provide music access and education to all students. To qualify for the Best Communities designation, Cherry Creek Schools answered detailed questions about funding, graduation requirements, music class participation, instruction time, facilities, support for the music program and community music-making programs. Responses were verified with school officials and reviewed by The Music Research Institute at the University of Kansas.

Indian Ridge music class“This award recognizes more than just the excellence of the performing arts programs in the Cherry Creek School District,” said Paul Cribari, an instructional facilitator with specialization in K-12 performing arts for Cherry Creek Schools. “It also recognizes that this excellence does not occur in isolation; that excellence in the arts is the product of a supportive collective that includes parents, community members, administrators and students. I am so proud to be part of a community that recognizes the importance of music in a student’s overall educational experience.”

Indian Ridge 3.jpgResearch into music education continues to demonstrate educational, cognitive and social skill benefits for children who make music. In a series of landmark studies by scientists and researchers at Northwestern University, a link was found between students in community music programs and lifelong academic success, including higher high school graduation rates and improved college attendance. In another study from the university, it was discovered that the benefits of early exposure to music education improves how the brain processes and assimilates sounds, a trait that lasts well into adulthood.

West Middle School OrchestraThis is not the first honor for the performing arts program in the Cherry Creek School District. Every year, vocal and instrumental groups are selected to perform at prestigious music conferences and festivals across the country and around the world. CCSD high school theater groups have received numerous "Bobby G" Awards, which honor outstanding achievements by students and educators in the areas of performance, design, direction, choreography, orchestration, technical production and overall production excellence. In 2014, Cherry Creek High School was named a GRAMMY Signature School by the GRAMMY Foundation for excellence in music education.
