Cherry Creek lacrosse team practices “service above self” with flower power

The Cherry Creek High School girls’ lacrosse team scored a big win – not on the field, but in the community – at the Colorado Garden & Home Show on Feb. 21.

Team members were part of a group of 120 Boy Scouts and Rotary Club members who helped break down ten of the show’s many beautiful gardens. More than 6,560 flowers from the gardens were pulled from those ten gardens, placed in 820 boxes and loaded on two semitrailers to be distributed to nursing homes, hospices and hospitals throughout the Denver metro area, as far south as Castle Rock and as far north as Erie. The project, called “Flower Power,” was started in 1996 by the Arvada Rotary Club and has grown to involve more than 23 Rotary Clubs in Rotary District 5450.

They were assigned the entrance garden, which is the largest garden at the show and a second garden which was also quite large!”

The team worked diligently without a break to clean the gardens of the plants, insert them in boxes, eight to a box, and take them on rolling racks to the dock where they were loaded on the trailers.

The team’s cooperation with Boy Scout troops and the many Rotary Clubs involved earned them admiration for their hard work and persistence.

“They definitely practiced the Rotary motto of “Service Above Self” though their efforts,” Hershberger said.
