CCSD Before & After School programs earn Qualistar designation

The Cherry Creek School District’s Extended Child Services Before & After School programs are the first in Colorado earn an important designation for quality child care.  The programs earned recognition through the Qualistar Colorado emerging school-age child care rating system.

“We are proud to be the first school-age programs in the state to earn the Qualistar Rating™,” said Sarah Conley, Extended Child Services coordinator for Cherry Creek Schools. “This designation highlights the quality of our Before & After School programs and gives parents another tool to use when making child care decisions for their families.”

The Qualistar Rating™ is Colorado's Quality Rating System (QRS) that measures the quality of child care programs.  The intent of the Qualistar Rating™ is to give licensed programs a measurement of quality and recommendations on how to improve the quality of the care they provide. Qualistar evaluates the learning environment, family partnerships, staff training and education, adult-to-child ratios, group sizes and accreditation.

The Qualistar Rating™ aligns with Cherry Creek Schools’ philosophy of continuous improvement by:

  • Creating consistent quality of programs district-wide;
  • Supporting employee training and continual improvement;
  • Reinforcing commitment to quality and leadership;
  • Reinforcing families’ awareness of commitment to providing quality child care;
  • Marketing these programs to the community;
  • Helping parents make more informed choices on the type of care they would like for their child.

Qualistar-rated Before & After School programs are offered at all 42 elementary schools in the Cherry Creek School District.  These programs provide child care before and after school on regular school days and also offer full-day care for school holidays, non-contact days, and school breaks (summer, fall, winter and spring), when enrollment is sufficient.
While attending Before & After School programs, students are given the opportunity to participate in a variety of activities including, but not limited to, homework assistance, creative expression, science, technology, indoor/outdoor recreational games, health and fitness, music appreciation, dramatic play, communication skills, cognitive reasoning, building and construction and appreciation of diversity.  Additionally, these programs offer a variety of activities that promote life skills such as teamwork, problem-solving, creativity, leadership, sportsmanship and community service.
