5th Gear fun for 5th Gear Kids
From boot camp and bowling to yoga and zumba, 5th Gear Kids are finding out how much fun energy balance can be.  They’re learning that balancing fun physical activity with a nutritious diet gives them energy and helps them stay healthy.

For example, at Arrowhead Elementary, fifth graders did zumba with Tony the Tiger, and at Village East Elementary, students got to meet four members of the women’s basketball team from the University of Denver.  They found out what it’s like to be collegiate student athlete, and how staying healthy helps them do well in class and on the court.

Since the 5th Gear Kids program launched in October, every fifth grader in the Cherry Creek School District – that’s more than 4,000 kids! – has been able to use their 5th Gear Kids card to earn points and prizes and get discounts at participating restaurants and recreation facilities. Their families are also able to use the card for a 10% discount on all Private Selection foods at King Soopers.

The 5th Gear Kids program was developed by researchers at the University of Colorado Anschutz Health and Wellness Center in collaboration with the Children’s Hospital Foundation, Cherry Creek Schools and Aurora Public Schools.  It is funded by a grant from the Colorado Health Foundation.
