Cherry Creek Schools Honor Band Concert features “best of the best”

CCSD HS Honor Band low woodwinds and saxophones
It’s not unusual to hear beautiful music coming from the band, choir or orchestra rooms at Grandview High School. But on a snowy January evening, the sounds of “Greek Folk Song Suite” by Franco Cesarini emanated from… a storage room.

That’s where the saxophone and low woodwind section of the Cherry Creek Schools High School Honor Band was holding a sectional rehearsal. Crowded in between shelves of marching band supplies, students playing saxophone, bass clarinet and bassoon were guided through the intricacies of the three-movement piece by Cherry Creek High School Band Director Sara Wynes.

CCSD HS Honor Band ClarinetsAt the same time, Wynes’ fellow CCHS Band Director Tim Libby was working with the clarinet section in the orchestra room. Grandview Band Director Keith Farmer was working with the high woodwinds (students who play piccolo, flute and oboe) in a choir room. Eaglecrest High School Band Director Jason Mabrey was working with the trumpet section in a second choir room. Smoky Hill High School Band Director Zak Ruffert was working with the percussion section in the band room while Overland High School Band Director Ryan Monarch was working with the French horn section in the music teachers’ office.

They were drilling four diverse pieces of music the students will perform in the 13th Annual Cherry Creek Schools Honor Band Concert, which will be held at 4:30 p.m. on Saturday, February 2, in the auditorium at Grandview. The performance will begin with the 69-member Middle School Honor Band, followed by the 66-member High School Honor Band. Students had to audition for the ensembles and those selected represent the best middle and high school musicians from across the Cherry Creek School District’s 108 square miles.

CCSD HS Honor Band Percussion“These are students who want something extra, who want to push themselves to the next level,” explained OHS Band Director Ryan Monarch. “They love doing it. It’s not work to them. They have fun.”

And they are passionate about making music.

“I really love being able to express things through music that you really can’t express through words,” said French horn player Nicole Benson, who is a sophomore at Cherry Creek High School.

“I love to play in ensembles where everyone really wants to be there because the sound is just a lot different,” added fellow French horn player Anna Wikowsky, a senior at Grandview.

“I’m here because I love music, music is my passion,” said Owen Eichenseer, a junior at Eaglecrest High School who also plays French horn. He’s made the honor band for five consecutive years and says he enjoys meeting new musicians each year. “I think it unites all the schools together in a way that, really, nothing else can.”

CCSD HS Honor Band FlutesThe students learn the concert music on their own and polish it during the sectional rehearsals. Then they have the opportunity to work with guest clinicians on Friday and Saturday before the concert. Dr. Matthew Dockendorf, assistant director of bands and instructor of music at the University of Colorado will conduct the middle school band, while Dr. Donald McKinney, director of bands and associate professor at CU will conduct the high school band.

“It’s a different experience being in front of someone who is not their home band director,” Monarch said.

The CCSD Honor Bands program was established in 2006 to continually raise the standard of music education in the district, affirm the critical role that the arts play in the education of all students and to recognize exceptional student musicians.

CCSD HS Honor Band Trumpets“As teachers, we love offering this opportunity to our students. They bring back fresh energy and heightened musicality that inspires the peers in their home programs,” said Sara Wynes. “We are supported by the district Activities Office and it wouldn't be possible to carry on this valuable tradition without this team!”

The 13th Annual Cherry Creek Schools Honor Band Concert is free and open to the public and Monarch encourages the community to attend.

“They’re going to hear the best of the best that Cherry Creek has to offer.”

Congratulations to all of the Cherry Creek School District Honor Band musicians!
