School kitchen teams show off culinary creativity

Students who eat breakfast or lunch in their school cafeteria this week are discovering that their kitchen staff members are more than good cooks. In addition to preparing and serving more than 784,000 breakfasts and 3.7 million lunches annually, the food service employees are also talented gingerbread artists. Kitchen teams at 25 schools showed off their culinary and construction skills by creating some amazing gingerbread houses. It was all part of the 3rd Annual Gingerbread House Contest, sponsored by the Cherry Creek Schools’ Food and Nutrition Services Department.

“This is a fun way for our kitchen staff members to model creativity and collaboration to our students,” said Beth Wallace, director of Food and Nutrition Services. “Students see that the skills they are learning in the classroom – like teamwork and innovation – are relevant in the real world.”

The contest featured a wide variety of gingerbread buildings including colorful cottages, a castle complete with drawbridge and moat, a log cabin with a candy corn fire and a whimsical village. The mouthwatering masterpieces were deliciously decorated and inhabited by all kinds of culinary creatures, from marshmallow snowmen to graham and gummy bears to the casts of “Frozen” and “A Nightmare Before Christmas.”

The top teams were:
•    First place – Arrowhead Elementary, Justine Prevost, Kitchen Manager
•    Second place – Overland High School, Josh Miller, Kitchen Manager
•    Third place – Cherry Creek High School, Garrett Croom, Kitchen Manager

Later this week, there will be a drawing at each participating elementary school. One lucky student who eats breakfast or lunch at school will get to take the gingerbread house home. Another student will win a gingerbread house kit.
