“A nation that does not honor its heroes will not long endure.
” – President Abraham Lincoln
Students and staff at every school in the Cherry Creek School District will honor our nation’s veterans and active duty servicemen and women during the district’s 2nd Annual Veterans Week, Nov. 5-9. Veterans and active duty military personnel are cordially invited to attend the events and activities being hosted by every school in the district.
“It is powerful for our students to learn about our nation’s heroes by meeting some of them in person,” said Superintendent Mary Chesley. “We want our students to understand that the freedoms they enjoy were made possible by the men and women who have served and sacrificed on our behalf.”
On Nov. 7, Cottonwood Creek Elementary will host a Veterans Day tea and musical tribute and Liberty Middle School will present a Veterans Week assembly featuring the school’s band, choir and orchestra. On Nov. 8, Aspen Crossing Elementary will welcome members of the U.S. Air Force, Navy, and Marines in conjunction with a display of military vehicles, while students from West Middle School will honor veterans with a flag gauntlet outside their school. On Nov. 9, Horizon Community Middle School will host a Veterans Day Breakfast, veterans will lead students in the Pledge of Allegiance at Eaglecrest High School and Overland High School will hold an assembly recognizing veterans with the Blazer Medal of Excellence.
Lessons about Veterans Day have been incorporated into many different classes, including English, history, social studies and civics. Students have the opportunity to share what they have learned by entering their own writing, poem, artwork or music that answers the prompt “What do America’s veterans mean to you?” in the Cherry Creek Schools Veterans Week Tribute Contest. A panel of veterans and community members will select winners from the finalists submitted by each school.
Last year, more than 2,000 veterans, active duty servicemen and women, and other community members visited a Cherry Creek school during Veterans Week.A complete list of 2012 Veterans Week events is available here.
