What is AVID?
Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) is a sixth grade through high school program to prepare students in the academic middle with potential for success in rigorous secondary curriculum for four-year college eligibility.

AVID is designed to increase school wide learning and performance. The focus of AVID is to ensure that all students and most especially the least served students in the middle, capable of completing a college preparatory path, will succeed in rigorous curriculum, will enter mainstream activities of the school, will increase their enrollment in four-year universities and colleges, and will become educated and responsible participants in a democratic society.
AVID is an academic, regularly scheduled elective program based on writing as a tool of learning, inquiry method, and collaborative grouping. The three main components of the program are academic instruction, tutorial support, and motivational activities. The goal of AVID is to educate the "whole student." This is achieved by unifying six important elements of education: students, curriculum, faculty, tutors, parents and community.

All middle and high schools in the Cherry Creek School District offer AVID.
AVID Students
AVID students are students in the academic middle who have not previously succeeded in a rigorous college preparatory path but are capable of doing so. AVID program participants must choose to participate and demonstrate this choice by completing an application and interview process. If selected, AVID students enroll in rigorous academic classes and in the AVID elective class, where they receive academic support.
Selection Criteria
Students with academic potential who:
Fall within the five identified academic “achievement gap” areas
·  White & Asian - Black & Hispanic
    Native English speakers - English Language Learners
·   Less mobile - More mobile
·   Students at or above proficient - Students below proficient
·   High socio-economic status - Low socio-economic status
·   Average to high test scores
·   2.0 - 3.5 GPA ("B" and "C" grades)
·   May be the first to attend college
·   Demonstrate appropriate classroom behavior
·   Maintain good attendance
·   Have been historically underserved/underrepresented in four-year colleges
·   Have college potential with support
·   Have the desire and motivation to prepare for entrance to a four-year college
·   May have special circumstances
AVID Curriculum
The AVID curriculum, based on over 30 years of research and rigorous standards, is developed by middle and senior high school teachers in collaboration with college professors, and emphasizes teaching pedagogy which focuses on writing-to-learn, inquiry, collaboration and reading for comprehension. This allows college preparatory classes to be accessible to all students.
AVID Tutors
Tutors are available in the AVID elective class two days a week where they facilitate student access to rigorous curriculum. As students from colleges and universities, tutors also serve as role models. Tutors are trained at the district level to provide academic support. They receive 16 hours of instructional training in writing, inquiry, collaboration and reading for comprehension. Tutors use Socratic dialogue while facilitating their group. National Demonstration Schools
AVID National Demonstration School status offers valuable recognition for outstanding AVID sites. These schools have made a commitment to a process of self-evaluation, program improvement and implementing AVID school wide, as well as a commitment to share what they have learned with other schools. Benefits of being a Demonstration School include the opportunity for the students to gain invaluable experience representing the AVID program and ideals, gaining the confidence to speak in public, having the opportunity to meet community leaders, and to participate as one of the model programs in an international organization.

AVID Scholarships
The purpose of The Giving Generation AVID Graduate with Distinction College Scholarship is to increase enrollment of AVID students in four-year colleges and universities. Two scholarships in the amount of $2500.00 are awarded each year. These scholarships are intended to reward the pursuit of rigor and academic excellence as well as assist students and their families to afford a four-year college or university based on financial need. AVID seniors, who will graduate from the district, have successfully completed their senior year in the AVID program and have met the criteria for "AVID Graduate with Distinction" exemplifying their own Advancement Via Individual Determination is eligible to apply.
